The son of Thomas & Selinda Bechtol McCombs and the husband of Anna McCombs. In 1860, he was a laborer living in Martic Township, Lancaster County, but by 1864 resided in Providence Township, Lancaster County. He stood 5' 2" tall and had brown hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the overstated age of eighteen in Lancaster County August 29, 1864, and mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. K, 79th Pennsylvania Infantry. He is listed absent sick at muster-out, and we will not learn his discharge date until the National Archives reopens post-covid and again permits access to his compiled military service records.

The 1841 birth year on his tombstone is probably incorrect. The 1860 census lists his birth year as 1848, and the 1900 census claims 1844. His stated age at enlistment was eighteen, confirming the 1900 census, albeit enlistment age claims must be viewed with great skepticism. Had he been twenty years old at enlistment, it would have been extremely unlikely that he would have understated his age. His obituary in the Lancaster Semi-Weekly New Era claims he died "in his sixty-third year." His obituary in the Lancaster Semi-Weekly New Era claims he died "in his sixty-third year." (I will eventually read his pension which may shed light on the correct date.)
