A biographical sketch of Solomon Bales taken from info in Hazzard's History, Henry Co., IN.

Solomon Bales was born June 15, 1834, in Blue River Twp., Henry Co., IN, a son of Parnell and Elizabeth (Koons) Bales, both natives of Tennessee.
Solomon remained, till the age of sixteen, on the farm with his parents and received a common-school education. He went to work on the farm of Solomon Cory for seven years, then for nine months, he worked at the carpenter's trade with James Dyke. He settled on the farm of Thomas Sears, in Stony Creek Twp., Henry Co., IN, in 1857, and then in March of 1858, he moved to a farm belonging to Henry Manifold. Subsequently, he bought forty acres from Joseph Corn, which adjoined eighty acres owned by his wife, and sometime after bought a farm of Nathan Freeman. Some six years later, he bought the farm of Robert H. Taylor which contained 103 acres. After the death of Solomon's first wife, Elizabeth, he gave their daughter, Ada, the first forty acres of land purchased by him.
Solomon married Elizabeth Cory, in May of 1857, the daughter of Noah and Lucretia Cory. She died October 13, 1862, leaving one daughter: Ada Josephine, who married Wilson Drake. Solomon married for a second time, on December 24, 1863, to Lucinda Pidgeon, the daughter of David and Rachel Pidgeon. They had a family of four children: William Henry, Rachel Elizabeth, Albert Lindley, and Dellie Florence.
Solomon, and his wife, were members of the Society of Friends; and politically, he was a Republican.
