Herbert Hampton "Hub" Colvin, 92 (b. 5 Oct 1906), of Hoboken, died Monday night (9 Nov 1998) at his residence following a lengthy illness.

A native of Wayne County, he was a son of the late Wade H. Colvin and Mattie Harper Colvin. He was also preceded in death by his son, Charles Wade Colvin and his brother, Roy Colvin.

He was a member of Hoboken Baptist Church where he was a deacon emeritus and had formerly been Sunday School Superintendent, Training Union Director, Church Clerk and a member of the Building Committee for the present sanctuary.

He was a retired educator, having begun his career as a coach and teacher at Empire Junior High School in Jesup. His entire work interest had been teaching with the exception of three years when he worked for Atlantic Coast Line Shops in Waycross. He had been a principal at several elementary and junior high schools as well as a teacher of Vocational Agriculture for Hoboken High School. When he retired, he was employed by Brantley County Board of Education as a teacher at Brantley County High School.

He served on the Hoboken City Council for 28 years and had served as Judge of Recorder's Court for the City of Hoboken. He also served as a Congressional Consultant on the Eighth District Special Advisory Staff of U.S. Congressman W. L Stuckey and on Governor Sanders' staff.

He and his wife, Macie Jacobs Colvin of Hoboken, would have been married 62 years on Dec. 19. Additional survivors include two daughters, Diane Wilkes (husband Jimmy) of St. Simons Island and Debbie Colvin of Orlando, FL; grandchildren, Jason, Carrie, Susan, Mark, and Kristy Wilkes; a great grandchild, Taylor Wilkes; two sisters, Lena Scurry of Patterson and Cappie Tyre of Waycross; several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11, from Hoboken Baptist Church with Rev. Earldene McCorvey and Olin DuBose officiating.
Music was by the men's choir of the church. Songs, "In the Garden," "In the Sweet By and By," "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms."

Interment followed in Oakland Cemetery in Waycross.

Pallbearers were Jason, Wilkes, Mark Wilkes, Tommy Colvin, Buster Tyre, Roy Colvin, Wallace Larkins, Wayne Williford and Rusty Kelley.

The honorary escort was composed of members of Brantley County Retired Teachers Association.

Chambless Funeral Home of Nahunta was in charge of arrangements.
