Served as a representative in the Indiana state legislature in 1843 and 1845. In 1845 he helped open the Barlow Road into Oregon, his trip published in 1847 as Journal of Travels over the Rocky Mountains. The book served as a guide book for future travelers to Oregon. Served in the Cayuse War as Peace Commissioner. Laid out the town of Dayton, Oregon. In 1853 became the superintendent of Indian affairs for the Oregon Territory, but was removed in 1857 for being too lenient. Served as Oregon’s speaker in the house of representatives in 1862 and State Senator from 1864 - 1868.
