Grace Emily Elmore, 80, died Sunday, December 12, 2010, at Windsor Place in Iola, Kansas.
Grace was born July 14, 1930, in Big Bow, Kansas, the daughter of Christian Henry and Mamie Lula Pearl (Kibbe) Schweikhard.
She lost her mother early in life when Lula died of dust pneumonia. She was placed in foster care at the age of 7, where she endured several difficult years apart from her siblings. At 13, she was accepted as a member of the Clemons family on a chicken farm in Erie.
Grace married Carl Elmore at 18.
She worked at Miller Dress Factory and Kansas Aluminum when she wasn't gardening.
She canned much of her produce to feed her children and loved animals, reading, bowling, and woodworking. She was soft-spoken and caring and taught her children to treat others as they wished to be treated.
She is survived by a sister, Lucy Blair, of Delta, CO; four daughters, Peggy Luken and husband, Kenny, of Gas, KS, Vicky Taber and husband, Paul, of Reading, KS, Nancy Jones, of Newton, KS, and Judy Quinlain and husband, Rick, of Cincinnati, OH; two sons, Timmy, of Osage, KS, and Carey and wife, Christine, of El Dorado, KS; 21 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two children, Danny Dean and Betty Jean; three grandchildren; and six sisters and brothers, Ella, Pauline, Esther, Lawrence, Albert, and William.
Funeral service will be Friday, Dec. 17, 2010, at the First Christian Church in Iola, KS. Pastor Dave McGullion will officiate. Burial will be in Iola Cemetery, Iola, KS.
Memorial gifts suggested to the Windsor Place Fundraiser (WPFR) for resident's activities, and may be left with the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel of Iola, KS, which is in charge of arrangements.
