Mahala Catherine (Gambrell) Antley ....was married to Rev J. S. Antley, a Baptist minister. In S.C. they resided until their removal to Mississippi prior to the Civil War, living in Rankin county, and from there moved to Clinton, making that their home for several years. While there during the Civil War, she, with the other Southern women, worked earnestly and untiringly in aid of the Confederate Army, binding up wounds, aiding the distressed and in all worthy charities, did what she could.
A few years of her life were spent in New Orleans, where one of the great.....s came , the death of her beautiful, gifted daughter, Mrs Fairfield. For the past eight years she (Catherine)had resided in Forest. Her husband preceded her to the grave thirty nine years ago. She is survived by five children (two more had preceded her in death), twelve grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. She was a member of the Baptist church almost all her life (her father was also a Baptist minister).
