Batesburg-Leesville - Services for Gurney O. Swygert, 83, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Cedar Grove Lutheran Church. Visitation will be from 7:30 to 9 tonight at Charles R. Shealy and Sons Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Palmetto Hospice of Richland Memorial Hospital, South Carolina Cancer Society or the organ church fund. Mr. Swygert died Wednesday, Jul 20, 1993. Born in Batesburg-Leesville, he was a son of the late Johnny and Inez Rikard Swygert. He retired as a master welder and farmer, was a Jamil Shriner and a member of Saluda Masonic Lodge 103, Order of the Eastern Star 24, 32 Degree Scottish Rite Columbia, the Brotherhood and Cedar Grove Lutheran Church. Surviving are his wife, Wakefield Risinger Swygert; a son, Fred Swygert Sr. of Batesburg-Leesville; foster sons, Fred Carswell of West Columbia and Jerry Carswell of Lexington; a sister, Rama Briggs of Batesburg-Leesville; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. © The State, Columbia, SC, 21 Jul 1994
