James Morris had served as a private in Capt. John Christopher's Company of Mounted Volunteer Militia in the War of 1812.

James Morris married Winifred Harbour on 30 October 1815.

The records of the Woodford County court show that on 1 Mar 1830, James Morris and John Allen were appointed adjutants to John Wiggs, a Captain of Patrol in Capt. Holbert's Militia Company. On 13 May 1831 James executed a chattel mortgage to Ambrose S. Steele to secure a debt of $112. These records are found in Woodford Co., KY Order Books F, p. 115 and M, p. 411.

After moving to Scott County in 1831, James and Winifred made their home near the Stamping Ground. James is believed to have died there.
