Dan Garland met Magaret Matilda Powell in Cades Cove after his parents moved there from Georgia in 1840. They married in 1870 and soon started a family which eventually included ten children. About 1874 they moved to the Upper Stecoah Community of Graham County, NC where several of the children were born. Dan served on the School Committee and farmer for a living, accumulating several parcels of land as time went by. His wife was a merchant, midwife, and herb gardener. She collected, and grew herbs used to treat those who were sick. After Dan died, she sold her store and moved to Blue Ridge, GA. She owned and operated a store there until she died in 1925.

Dan's grandparents, Samuel Gutridge and Polly Stanley Garland, Jr., had moved from Yancey County, NC to Graham (then it was still Cherokee County) where Samuel, Jr. was involved in the Cherokee Indian Removal in 1838. About 1850 they moved to Union County, GA. From there, Dan's parents moved to Cades Cove, TN in the mid-1860's. He served in the Union Army during the War Between The States.
