His birth name as recorded in the family Bible was actually Garrett Franklin, the son of Ansel Bailey and Rutha Tipton. He was one of fourteen children, his siblings being John M., Eliza Jane, Joseph, Hiram Madison, Mary Ann, Stephen Calvin, Wiley Manning, Love, Martha Crawford, Nellie, Sarah Melinda, William Sherman and Josephine.

He married Eliza Cole, daughter of James Cole and Nancy Monday, and they were parents of Lee, Charles, Dora (Callihan), Julia (McKinney), Nancy (Buttram), Jesse, James, and Luther.

'George' was always a neatly dressed man, wearing a shirt and tie as his usual attire.

After Eliza died in 1941, he married a second time to Mrs. Fred Reneagar from Etowah. In his later years he made his home with daughter, Julia
