William Hart Alden was born April 26, 1839, the son of Hiram and Mary Tower Alden of Randolph. He was the younger brother of Hiram C. Alden, who is also in this index.

He is listed in the 1850 census as 11 years old, living with his three siblings in their parents' home. His father, Hiram Alden, was employed as a boot manufacturer.

In 1860, he was 21 years old, and living with his parents and two siblings. He was not employed.

He was 22 at the time of his enlistment as a Private on April 16, 1861. Mustered out on July 22, 1861 at Long Island, Boston Harbor, MA. Promoted to Full Sergeant on Sept. 23, 1862 when he enlisted in Company D, 4th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. Mustered out on Aug. 28, 1863 at Camp Hooker, Lakeville, MA.

On April 25, 1868 at the age of 29 he married 18-year old Florence Augusta Gutterson in Weymouth, MA. Their one child, Mary Flora Alden, was born on August 22, 1869 and his wife died the following day.

In 1880, he and his ten-year old daughter were living in his sister's house in Randolph. He and his brother-in-law worked at the boot factory.

In 1900, William Alden and his daughter were living together at 48 North Street. He was 61 and working as a shoe cutter, she was 30 and unmarried. By 1907 she
was an inmate of the Randolph Almshouse, and was sent to McDonnell Hospital in Brookline for over a year to be treated for "ill health."

By 1910, he was 71 and living at the Soldier's Home in Chelsea, MA.

William H. Alden died October 19, 1912 at the age of 73 of a cerebral hemorrhage at the Soldier's Home in Chelsea, MA. In 1920, his 50-year old daughter was a dependent of the Town of Randolph, living at the Town Farm. There is no record of her death.
