Former Homer, Alaska resident Carol Humbyrd (formerly, Carol Courtney Pacillo), 73, died Oct. 15, 2010, in Las Vegas, after a courageous battle with rheumatoid arthritis.

Carol Courtney was born Oct. 28, 1936, to John Courtney and Corinne Courtney in Worcester, Mass. In 1955, she graduated from Commerce High School in Worcester.

She moved to Hawthorne, Calif., in 1959, and worked as a secretary at Daniel Freeman Hospital. In 1967, she moved to Simi Valley, Calif., where she worked as the school secretary at Sequoia Junior High School until 1974. After that, Carol moved to Homer to assist her brother Tom Courtney with his business, Alora Charters. When he died in 1988, Tom left her Courtney's Tudor Service in Anchorage, which she owned until 2004. Carol was a secretary at Homer Electric Association for 23 years. She retired from HEA in 1999 and moved to Henderson, Nev., in 2001.

Carol was a talented artist and designed the Salty Dawg Saloon logo. She loved to sing and was a member of Sweet Adelines in Simi Valley, Homer and Las Vegas. She grew a beautiful garden in Homer, from which her grandchildren loved to pick strawberries and chives. Until her health declined, Carol was an avid fisherman and could be seen "first on the river" every year. She was a past president and member of Homer Emblem Club and member of Las Vegas Emblem Club.

Carol was preceded in death by her sister Corinne George; brother Thomas Courtney; and daughter Carolyn "Linny" Pacillo.

She was survived by her partner of 27 years, Milford "Pudgy" Hedglin of Henderson, Nev.; daughter Susan Pacillo and her husband Kevin Kennedy of Anchorage; son Michael Pacillo of Palmer; step-daughter Jodi Sibson and her husband Bryan Sibson of Eagle River; grandchildren Jennifer Pacillo-Baker of Eagle River, Heather Harris of Anchorage, Lacy Wilcox of Juneau, Matthew Coila of Sterling and Kaitlyn, Francis, Madelyn and Joshua Pacillo of Wasilla.

A memorial service will be held at the Homer Elks Lodge early in June 2011, after which her ashes will be scattered in Kachemak Bay.
