"The Gospel Messenger", Volume 10, No. 8 – August 1888:

James W. Carlisle.

Died January 19th, 1888, Brother James W. Carlisle, at the residence of his son, in Chambers County, Alabama. He was born in Jackson County, Georgia, February 24th, 1802, and at the time of his death was in his 86th year. He had lived in Morgan County, Georgia, almost from infancy till he attained the age of 25 years, after which he moved to Long Cane, Troup County, Georgia, where he remained until 1834, at which time he removed to Alabama. His home from that date till his death was in the counties of Chambers and Tallapoosa. He was received into the fellowship of the Baptist church over 60 years ago, and when the division in the denomination came upon the question of Modern Missions and humanly devised institutions he steadfastly continued in the apostles' doctrine and in the fellowship of all who strictly adhered to the "old paths" and walked therein. He was buried at Mount Hickory Church. The maiden name of his first wife was Pace, by whom he had several children. His second marriage was to Sister Mary Barber, whose maiden name was Barron, daughter of Elder Hiram Barron, deceased.
