M. A. J. Carlisle, husband of Matilda Holstun, was the son of Edmund G. Carlisle and Elizabeth Whatley.

His obituary appeared in the September 21, 1898 issue of the "LaFayette Sun" in Chambers County, Alabama. A transcript of the will was located and provided to me by Don Clark of Lafayette, AL and is shown here:

"Mr. M. A. Carlisle Dead.

On Tuesday of last week occurred the death of Mr. M. A. J. Carlisle at his home at Double Head. At the time of his death, he was eighty-two years and five months old. In many respects the life of this man was a remarkably interesting one. He was a soldier in the Indian Wars and has drawn a pension for years from the government. Mr. Carlisle has been a member of the Baptist church for forty-five years. He leaves a large family to mourn his loss. We offer condolence to the bereaved."

His will was recorded in Chambers County, Alabama. Mr. Don Clark o Lafayette, AL graciously provided a complete transcript of that will and court filing:

"Roanoke, Ala
May 11th 1895

Know all men by these presents that I, M. A. J. Carlisle, of Doublehead, Chambers County, Alabama, being of sound mind and in possession of my mental faculties yet mindful of the fact that death must come to all, do make public and declare this to be my last will and testament.

Item 1. I direct that when the breath is out of my body and I am dead, that I shall be buried at the cemetery at Mount Hickory Church in Chambers County, Alabama.

Item 2. I give and bequeath to my beloved wife during her natural life, the new home place now occupied by me containing thirty acres; also all the personal property and other assets of every description now owned by me.
This new home place is adjoining Charlie Higgin's land in Chambers County, Alabama.
At the death of my beloved wife Matilda (Holstun) Carlisle, it is my will that my executors hereafter named, shall sell the land and all the personal property and assets of every description, and make an equal division among all of my legal heirs viz: William H. Carlisle's heirs now in the state of Texas; Stanmore H. Carlisle of Roanoke, Alabama; Elizabeth M. Adam's heirs; Frank B. Carlisle of Roanoke, Alabama; Dollie Higgins wife of Joe L. Higgins; M. W. Carlisle of Roanoke, Alabama; and John H. Carlisle of Roanoke, Ala.

Item 3. My old homestead place in Chambers County, Alabama, containing two hundred acres more or less, I desire my executors hereafter named, at an early day as practicable after my death to sell this property and divide the proceeds equally between William H. Carlisle's heirs; Dollie Higgins, Elizabeth M. Adams' heirs; and Stanmore H. Carlisle, it being fully understood that there is to be only four shares in this division, and each son and daughter named above or their heirs are entitled to one share.

Item 4. I do hereby appoint Stanmore H. Carlisle and John A. Carlisle, my oldest and youngest sons my executors of this my last will and testament, and direct that they shall be exempt from giving bond.

A. J. Carlisle, deceased, and that said Will together with the proof thereof have been received in my office in Book of Wills Vol. 3 Page 63.

Randolph County

In the Probate Court of Chambers County in the state of Alabama.
To the Honorable A. J. Driver, Judge of Probate for said county of Chambers:

Your petitioners John A. Carlisle and Stanmore H. Carlisle respectfully represent that Michael A. J. Carlisle, who was an inhabitant of said county of Chambers in said state at the time of his death departed this life at his residence in said Chambers County on the 13th day of September 1898, leaving a last will and testament duly signed and published by him and attested by William A. Handley, C. D. Manley and J. P. Radney, residents of the town of Roanoke in Randolph County, Alabama, in which said will your petitioners are named as executors thereof.

And petitioners herewith produce said will and propound the same for Probate and record in this Court.
Your petitioners further state that said Michael A. J. Carlisle left a widow who is Mrs. Matilda Carlisle, aged about 78 years and residing in Chambers County, Alabama near Doublehead.

And the following named persons next of kin of said Testator with their ages and residences:
Stanmore H. Carlisle, over 21 years of age residing at Doublehead in Chambers County, Ala., one of your Petitioners; Mrs. Dolly Higgins, wife of Joe L. Higgins, over 21 years of age and resides at Doublehead in Chambers County, Ala.; M. W. Carlisle, over 21 years of age and resides at Roanoke in Randolph County, Ala.; J. A. Carlisle, over 21 years of age and resides at Roanoke in Randolph County, Ala., one of your petitioners; James W. Carlisle, over 21 years of age and resides at Roanoke in Randolph County, Ala.; Moses Carlisle, over 21 years of age and resides in Holland, Bell County, Texas; Michael Carlisle, under 21 years of age and resides with his mother Mrs. Mittie McClung in Holland, Bell County, Texas; Susie Harrison, wife of G. H. Harrison, over 21 years of age and resides at Albertville in Marshall County, Ala.; Eva Carlisle and Emma Carlisle, both under
21 years of age and resides with their mother Mrs. Mollie Carlisle in Roanoke in Randolph County, Ala.; Mattie Adams, over 21 years of age and resides in Chambers County, Ala., near West Point, Georgia; Pauline Adams, under 21 years of age and resides with her father Mick Adams in Chambers County, Ala., near West Point, Georgia.

Wherefore Petitioners pray that a day be set for hearing this Petition, that due notice thereof as required by law be given to the said widow and the said next of kin of said Testator; and that such other proceedings, orders and decrees may be had and made in the premises as may be requisite and proper to effect the due Probate and record of said will according to Law.
