James McDaniel, Benjamin Austin, Thomas E., George Hampton, and John Oliver Holder, all fought in the Civil War. James McDaniel and Thomas E. would not return home. Benjamin Austin was taken prisoner but exchange. James McDaniel was taken prisoner near Iuka, MS Jan 18, 1865 when he came home after learning his wife was ill. He was taken first to Nashville, then to Louisville, KY Jan 27, 1865 and finally to Camp Chase, Ohio arriving Feb 3, 1865. He died there March 25, 1865 of pneumonia. His wife died several months later and his children were left to be raised by their Grandmother Moore.
On the 1860 Burnsville Post Office, Tishomingo, Mississippi census we have the James McDaniel home. The household included the following:

James M. Holder, Head, age 30
Esther C. Holder, Wife, age 28
Lucinda J. Holder, age 9
Malissa A. Holder, age 6
James A. Holder, age 4
John W. H. Holder, age 2
George R. Holder, age 1/12
Thomas Holder, age 21 (brother)
George H. Holder, age 22 (brother)

After the 1860 census and before he left to fight in the civil war, James and Esther had another daughter, Betty. The children were living with Mary J. Moore, Esther's mother on the 1870 Township 3 Range 10, Tishomingo, Mississippi census, we have the following:

Melisa Holder, age 16
James Holder, age 14
John Holder, age 12
Rufus Holder, age 10
Betty Holder, age 8
Flistur Moore, age 19
Wm. Robinson, age 19
Only sons James and John have been located after 1870. Daughter Malissa A. has recently been located.

James served in Company D, Moreland's Cavalry, Alabama, CSA
