Ira Cantrell was born November 10, 1874 in Humboldt County, Nevada. He was the son of William Jasper Cantrell and Sarah Ellen (McDonnal or McDonald) Cantrell.

About 1880 his family moved from Nevada to Baker County, Oregon. In August 1882 his father bought out a squatter and filed a homestead claim September 10, 1882 near Lime, north of Huntington, Baker County, Oregon.

On April 6, 1898 Ira was married to Ora Adams at the Hotel in Granite, Grant County, Oregon. His brother Amos was one of the witnesses. No more is known of this marriage.

Ira married Zella Barnes on August 2, 1909 in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon. They had two sons, Orval A and Alvin F Cantrell. Alvin was born about two months after his father's death.

Ira was living in Springfield, Lane County, Oregon on October 10, 1911, when he died from injuries caused by a drag saw. He had tried to cross over the bar between the engine and the saw, when his pants got got and he was thrown into the saw blade. He later died at the Eugene Hospital in Eugene, Lane County, Oregon of shock. He was buried a Laurel Grove Cemetery in Springfield.
