Married Aug 13, 1854 Cynthia Ann Powers in Madison Co., Ind. Cynthia died in 1863 in Madison Co., Ind. After the death of the mother and father, their children were raised by their Uncle Levi Benefiel.

"Stewart" died in a hospital in New Madrid, Mo. of camp fever, age 33 yrs 5 mo. 12 day, Civil War Veteran, and farmer

He was called Stewart, no doubt from his grandmother, the half blood Mohawk Indian, Louisiana Stewart. He spent his early days on his father's farm. He moved to Madison Co., In with the family in 1835. After his marriage, they moved to Fillmore Co. MN in 1855 and farmed. His brother Isham spent the winter of 1858 with them. Stewart returned to Indiana; and in 1861 enlisted in the Union Army--(taken from "The Benefiel Families of Indiana and their Descendants" by Evelyn Benefiel Stout 1983
