Marvel Orr, on October 15, 1862, at the age of twenty one, volunteered for service to furthur the Union cause during the Civil War. He was assigned to Company E- Eleventh Missouri Calvalry at Rolla, Missouri. He signed up for a period of three years by placing an "X" for his signature as he could not read or write. He was discharged on November 11, 1863 after being hospitalized August 15, 1863 with a diagnosis of "rhematism." In U.S. Grant Army Republic.

He married Elizabeth Martha Barnhart August 11, 1864 in Maries County, Missouri.

Children: Matilda J, Mary Tennessee, George Harrison, Martha Ellen, James Henry, Marilla Arizona, John Washington, Cora Isabell, Henrietta, Robert Ervin, Arnold Anderson, Myrtle Ann (Mertie), Sophie Elizabeth, Marvel Elmer.

Matilda married Arnold H Russell buried in Lea Cemetery in Crawford County, Missouri.

Marvel was the son of James Marvin Orr and Temperance Coffey.
