Captain J. D. McCamant is a well-known pioneer citizen. He was born in Grayson County, Virginia, and coming to Texas in 1855 he located in Hunt County. He remembers visiting Fort Worth as early as 1857, when it was a small and very insignificant outpost, the only store there at the time being owned by Julius Field. Captain McCamant served two terms as clerk of Hunt County before the war, and at the outbreak of the conflict he joined McCulloch's Company of Texas Rangers and was in service on the frontier of Texas for protection against the Indians. After twelve months of this service he returned to Hunt county and organized the company of which he was elected captain and reported for duty to General Albert Pike in the Indian Territory, and continued in service there during the remainder of the war. He lived in Fort Worth from about 1880 until 1885. In 1881 he made a trip to Jones County, and in 1885 moved there permanently, where he is now engaged in the mercantile business at McCamant, the postoffice having been named in his honor.
