George Clifton Hairston was the son of Pinkney Madison and Julia Catherine Wallis Hairston. He was born in the New Salem District of Cobb County, GA.

In 1900, G.C. Hairston accepted a position as stone cutter for the McNeel Marble Company in Marietta, GA.

On April 26, 1906, George C. Hairston married Addie Dobbs in Cobb County, GA (Cobb County Marriage Book E., p. 559).

At the time of his death, Hairston was foreman of the lettering department of the McNeel Marble Company; a position he held since 1924.

G.C. Hairston was a principal figure in establishing baseball in Marietta. He brought to Marietta such college stars as Jay Partridge, Joe Palmissano, Lefty Willis, Tom Angley, Clay Parrish and others, whom he managed just after leaving school. He was known over the county as an ardent sports fan.

Mr. Hairston died of pneumonia. The funeral was held on Monday, Jan. 27, 1936 from the First Methodist Church, where for thirty years he was a member. The interment was in the city cemetery.
