Roy Kleiser Abel, 92, of Lakeside died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2008, at RTA Hospice and Palliative Care in Lakeside surrounded by many members of his family. Roy was born Nov. 25, 1915, in Vicksburg, Miss., to the late George Horace and Emma Evelyn (Gallaher) Abel.
He retired from the U.S. Army as a signal corps officer and served his country during WWII and the Korean War. He moved to Arizona from Georgia in June 1954, some 54 years ago.
Roy is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Dickinson) Abel of Lakeside; three daughters, Dorothy Ellen (William) Rock of Allen, Texas, Mary Joyce (George) Cariaganis of Norfolk, Va., and Nancy Elizabeth Majecki of Justin, Texas; six sons, David Roy (Carol) Abel of Snowflake, Joseph Eugene (Fran) Abel of Sierra Vista, Thomas Martin (Lynn) Abel of Sierra Vista, Paul Marshall Abel of Scottsdale, John Raymond (Barbara) Abel of Haslet, Texas, and Robert Leland Abel of Sierra Vista; brother James Abel of Lake Charles, La.; sister Evie Mae Lee of Farmerville, La.; 24 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by daughter Trudy Evelyn Abel in 1945; son Gerald Anthony Abel in 2003, Gerald's wife, Frances Irene Abel in 2000; five brothers, Leland Abel, John Abel, Hollis Abel, Robert Abel and Weslely Abel.
A memorial service was held Monday, Sept. 1, at Solterra at White Mountains in Lakeside. Funeral Mass was held Monday, Sept. 8, at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church in Sierra Vista.
Inurnment followed at the Fort Huachuca National Cemetery in Sierra Vista with military honors.
The family suggests contributions to RTA Hospice and Palliative Care, 1789 W. Commerce Drive, Lakeside, AZ 85929.
