Edward Earl Burgess, 77, of Mesa, AZ passed away October 28, 2006 in Mesa. Edward was born October 23, 1929 in Memphis, Tennessee. He graduated from Kearny High School, San Diego, CA, Class of '48 and married Avis Jean Smith, November 27, 1949. He attended Linda Vista Baptist College, B.A., '55, Linda Vista Baptist Seminary, B. of Theology, '55, California Baptist Seminary, Covina, CA, Masters in Religious Education, '64, Temple Beth Emet Jewish Adult Institute Judaism, '80-81. He received an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity from Linda Vista Baptist Seminary, '89. Dr. Burgess pastored First Baptist Church Encanto, San Diego, CA '55-61. First Baptist Church East Los Angeles, '61-64. Bostonia Baptist El Cajon, CA '64-72. First Baptist Church El Centro, CA. '72-79. First Baptist Church Los Alamitos, CA '79-82. First Baptist Church Mesa, AZ '82-91. After his retirement in 1991, Dr. Burgess worked as interim pastor in various churches. When he was not in the pulpit, he spent his time sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ with the lost in need of salvation. He visited the sick, the dying, the widowed, and the orphaned. He also enjoyed the home he shared with his wife, Jean, and their family in Gilbert, AZ. He was proud of the 30 + trees he planted around the property as well as his vegetable garden. He enjoyed tending to and caring for the chickens, goats, pigs, horses, rabbits, geese, and pigeons on the farm. Among his hobbies were hunting and fishing. He was Chaplain Major for the United States Air Force, California Wing, '71-74. He was a life member of the Minister's Council, American Baptist Churches, U.S.A., He authored a book , "Christ the Crown of the Torah" published by Zondervan Publishing Company, 1983. His life text: "For me to live is Christ and to die is gain", Phil. 1:21. Edward is survived by his children Mark E. Burgess, San Diego, CA; Deborah J. Hedrick, Northern, CA; Janet L. Neild, El Centro, CA; Joshua T. Burgess, Queen Creek, AZ; Erin K. Smith, Portland, OR; and 6 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Avis Jean Burgess on October 21, 2005. A visitation will be from 10:30 to 11:30 AM, Thursday November 2, 2006 at First Baptist Church of Mesa, 4801 E. Brown Rd. Mesa, AZ, followed by services at 11:30 AM. Arrangements entrusted to Falconer Funeral Home.
