During the Revolutionary War some family members were loyal to the British and some were not. Francis Otway Byrd in particular, fought on the colonies side against the will of his father. It is not hard to understand why this had been the way the Byrd family was, as they had strong ties to England in many ways through his plantation and from his father and grandfather's trading business.
After Francis died, his wife and daughters had moved to Lynchburg due to her daughter Maria Byrd marrying Davidson Bradfute in 1809 and moving there.
