He served in the British Army during the American Revolution, He then built "The Cottage" in Clarke County, Virginia. He was the progenitor of the Shenandoah Valley Byrds.

Captain Byrd requested a private interment. In the nighttime procession, the mourners used pine torches to light their way, while Byrd's body was borne on the shoulders of his servants, who sang a solemn dirge as they wound their way the mile and a half to the Old Chapel for burial.
