Recovered from Wounds Suffered on Iwo Jima:
Cpl. Charles K. "Wahoo" Billings, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Billings, of Cookeville, Route 1, of the U. S. Marines, who volunteered for service in 1943, has been on foreign duty in the Pacific area since July, 1944, and was wounded at the battle of Iwo Jima. A number of weeks he was hospitalized, but according to a recent letter, has returned to active duty and states he is now in perfect health.
In his letter of April 22 to his parents, Cpl. Billings says upon his return to his old outfit, he found a car
load of mail which he was delighted to get as it has been so long since he had had news of home – the Tech Oracle and Putnam County Herald were among the collection, as were letters from Rev. B. N. Ramsey and numerous members of the Baptist church, for which he expressed sincere appreciation. He says also he had rather a bad wound but had the best of care and the prayers of those at home helped him to recover and now he is good as ever many
of his buddies were missing after this battle. The job now is to finish the war so they all can come home soon, he says.
Mr. and Mrs. Billings have another son in the service, J. R. Billings, U. S. Navy, with a medical detachment, stationed at the Great Lakes Traning Center. His former station was New York City.
