John was the son of William and Harriet (Mellor) Hepworth. His father owned William Hepworth & Sons, a wool business. As an adult he was in charge of the mills. He married Lydia Bloomfield on September 25, 1912 at the Church of St. Simeon, Philadelphia. In 1921 John and Lydia had their only child, Martha Jane, named after Lydia's mother. They bought a house at 1104 Wakling St in Frankford. In 1922 they bought a house in Ocean City, NJ, where they would spend their summers. John would work in the city and come down on the train to see his family. John died on February 14, 1944 at the age of 57.
