William was born in England. His parent's were George and Hannah (Mallinson) Hepworth. His father worked in worsted wool and was a clothier outside of Hepworth, England. He and his sister emigrated in 1869 and lived together in the borough of Bristol, Bucks Co., PA. William worked in a felt mill. Next door lived the "Miller" family (mispelled, should be Mellor). The Mellor family included daughter, Harriet Mellor, who also worked in the felt mill. In 1871 William married Harriett. Soon after they moved to Frankford in Philadelphia. They had 7 children: Mary Ann 1872, George M. 1876, Alice 1873, Ellen 1875 (died in infancy), Frances 1883, Emily and John 1886. William started a woolen business called "William Hepworth". Eventually he renamed it Hepworth & Sons. This company dealt with wool; garnetted, worsted, stocks: wools, noils and waste. They had several large mills in the Frankford area of Philadelphia. His sons, George and John worked in the business when they were older. He made sure his daughters went to college and had careers for themselves.
