George came to Stephenson Co. with his parents in 1844 where they settled on a farm near Buena Vista. In 1861 he enisted in Co. A, 48th Illinois Regiment. He was engaged in the battles at Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Corinth, Vicksburg and others, serving until the end of the war. After the war he took up farming. He was active in civic and political affairs and was elected to various offices in Buckeye Twp. (Extracted in part from his obituary, Freeport Daily Journal, July 17, 1899)

Originally buried in Bellview Cemetery the remains were moved to Oakland upon the death of his wife.
