Joshua Wells married Eliza Jane Butler on 2 August 1846 in Green County, Wisconsin. They had six children-only two survived them.

Joshua Wells remarried to Minnie (Engle) Nauertz on 23 February 1880 in Fayette County, Iowa.

Joshua Wells' obituary, all of his census reports (1850-1900) and family records have his birth year in 1824 or 1825. The 1833 birth year on his gravestone is incorrect.
