Alma was the daughter of Sophia and August Anderson. She was born in Malingsbo, Vastmanlands, Sweden and lived in Stockholm, Sweden for several years before immigrating with her parents and two sisters, Esther and Emmie, to Chicago in 1888. She married Charles Emerson Walter in 1905. Charles and Alma had four children: Raymond Walter (1906-1999), Margaret Walter (1908-2001), Grace Walter (1910-1996) and Edward Walter (1915-2002). Alma was a generous woman who always fed hobos who came to the door asking for food. She took in a baby girl whose mother had died and raised her until she was old enough to rejoin her father and siblings.
