Son of Joseph and Mary Howes. His is the first know burial in Northwest Cemetery. He came to Ashfield from Yarmouth, Ma. in 1791 with his wife, Bathsheba (Sears) Howes (1739-1799).

He was known as "Sailor Tom". He moved to Ashfield MA. He served as Private in Captains Ny & Griffith's Companies, Colonel Jacob's MA Regiment (DAR file 138182). His leg was once broken by a whale.1 He left a will on 9 March 1793; It was proved 3 Sep 1793.1
