CARLETON FERRIS BURIAL SERVICES ARE SET FOR SATURDAY AT 2 PM

Carlton G. Ferris, eldest and sole surviving son of Woodbridge N. Ferris, one-time Governor of Michigan and United States Senator, died this week in Sherman Oaks, Cal. His father was the founder of Ferris Institute.

Ferris, 85 years old, had only last year established a $25,000 Memorial Loan Fund at Ferris Institute honoring his father and mother, who established the college and administered it in the early half century of its operation. In addition, he presented the college with a $5,000 gift to be used for development purposes.

A student at Ferris Institute in the early 1890's, Mr. Ferris graduated from Purdue University where he earned an undergraduate degree in science. He later attended the University of Michigan and received his law degree in 1904.

He served with distinction as the Executive Vice President of the Illinois Chamber of Commerce from 1927 until his resignation in 1942. During the war years and immediately thereafter, he was a consultant for the Federal government in implementing the financial operation of the G. I. Bill at colleges and universities throughout the nation.

At an earlier period in his life, he served as an executive assistance to his father when the elder Ferris was United State Senator during the years 1923-1928. In 1948, Ferris retired and with his wife, Marguerite, who survives him, established his home in Sherman Oaks, Cal.

His later years were marked by an intensified interest in the resurgence of Ferris Institute as a state college. His annual visits to the campus were greeted with anticipation by college officials and staff. In 1958 he delivered a memorial all-college student convocation address on the early labors of his father and mother in establishing the distinctive philosophy and program which still characterizes the present day Ferris operation. He also participated in the dedication ceremonies marking the naming of one of the college's dormitories after his mother, Helen Gillespie Ferris.

Burial services will be held this Saturday at 2 pm in Highland View cemetery in Big Rapids. His body will be placed in the Ferris Mausoleum aside those of his illustrious parents. The Rev. David Debbink of the United church will conduct the graveside services.

Services here will be under the direction of the Rogers funeral home.
