Anders Beck (Elizabeth Emma's paternal grandfather) had a daughter Sarah (by his 2nd wife Cecelia Jensen) who married Walter Hoge. They had several sons but no daughters. Aunt Sarah wanted to take Elizabeth Emma and raise her as her own daughter, so Joseph Peter Beck allowed her to take "Lizzie". Joseph Peter Beck already had 5 and 1/2 other children in February 1899 and he knew his half-sister (Sarah) would give her a good home.
