Sarah was one of three daughters known born to John and Agnes McCamish. It is believed that she had a brother named John. Sarah's father is said to have died in route to the US or shortly after arriving in Philadelphia from Ireland. Sarah's mother Agnes and her sisters went on to settle in Pennsylvania. It is said that her mother Agnes lived with her and her husband George Hays, til her death around 1810. Sarah's sisters were Mary McCamish-wife of William Brown, and Jane McCamish-wife of James Clendenin. Sarah and George Hays had 10 children, and lived out their lives in Middlesex, Butler co., Pennsylvania.
