James C. Buchanan was the seventh and last child born to Jane (Young) and Walker Buchanan, both of Mercer County, Pennsylvania.

James served as a Private for the Union in the Civil War. He enlisted in Company I, Iowa 12th Infantry Regiment on 21 Aug 1862 and mustered out on 20 Jan 1866 at Memphis, Tennessee. He was 18 years old when he enlisted.

He later married Isabel Buchanan, and between them had four known children, Mary S. (1870-?), Dallas W. (1871-?), Sarah J. (1874-?), and Lucynelia (1876-?). James was a farmer by occupation.

According to the Iowa State Census Collection of 1836-1925, James was 70 years old in 1915 when he was living in the Soldier's Home in Marshalltown, Marshall County, Iowa.
