He later married Isabel Buchanan, and between them had four known children, Mary S. (1870-?), Dallas W. (1871-?), Sarah J. (1874-?), and Lucynelia (1876-?). James was a farmer by occupation.
According to the Iowa State Census Collection of 1836-1925, James was 70 years old in 1915 when he was living in the Soldier's Home in Marshalltown, Marshall County, Iowa.
