Walker Buchanan enlisted in the Civil War for the Union on 8 Apr 1862 in Company I, Iowa 31st Infantry Regiment. He was promoted to Full 4th Corporal on 12 Dec 1863 and was again promoted to Full 2nd Corporal on 16 Mar 1864. He mustered out on 27 Jun 1864 at Louisville, KY.

Walker Buchanan was the sixth of seven children born to Jane Young and Walker Buchanan of Pennsylvania. His brothers James C., Levi and Victor all served in the Civil War.

"Walker Buchanan was born in Mercer county, Penn., Oct. 25, 1841 and moved with his parents to Iowa when five years of age. When the civil war broke out he answered the call, enlisting in Camp I, 31st Infantry Iowa Vol, 1862 and served three years as a faithful soldier.
"He was married to Miss E. J. Dupuy Nov. 15, 1866 and to this union was born nine children, five boys and four girls, seven of whom with his wife survive him, two died in infancy. He moved to Kansas in 1871.
"He United with the M. E. church at the age of thirty-two and remained a faithful member of that church until six years ago at which time he placed his membership with the Stuart Baptist church, later moving it to the First Baptist church at Smith Center, nineteen months ago.
"He was a faithful husband, father and christian. He departed this life Dec. 19, 1907 surrounded by his companion and four boys and many friends. The funeral services were held at the Baptist church in Smith Center a 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 20 and the remains were laid to rest in Price cemetery west of Lebanon."
