On yesterday morning, Jan. 9th, Mr. O. P. Smith died suddenly at his residence in Rockbridge County, 2 miles from here. He was in Fairfield on Saturday attending to business and came home near night-ate a hearty supper and read till 11 o'clock and retired. His wife awakened about 2 o'clock and spoke to him, and receiving no answer, shook him, and still getting no reply hastened to give the alarm-Mr. C. T. Bell and Dr. Thomas were sent for. All their efforts to restore him, were without avail. He was about 70 years old. He is the father of Mrs. John S. Black, Mrs. David Steele, Mrs. John S. Black, Mrs. John Smith, of Rockbridge, and M. Louis Smith, of Bedford Co. He was a native of Rappahannock Co.-was a successful farmer. He will be buried at Mt. Carmel Church.
