Hans Christopherson Foss was born at Fossen Farm, Modum, Norway. In Norway they quite often went by the name of the farm where they were born. His surname when he came to America was Fossen and it was shortened to Foss. He came with several young people, one of whom later became his wife and her sister.

H.C.Foss, 70 years old, and a resident of Sandpoint for over 20 years, died at the Sandpoint hospital Wednesday morning. He had been in failing health for a number of months, suffering from heart trouble. Mr. Foss was born in Norway January 28 1853 and when he was 21 years of age he emigrated to the United States, locating at Menominee, Wis., where he was married. He lived there until he moved to Sandpoint in 1907. On his arrival here he helped in the construction of the Humbird mill, he being a millwright by trade. Later he entered the employ of a mill construction company and erected many lumber mills in the Pacific northwest and Canada. While away from home a good deal during his work, he maintained his home here. He is survived by his widow, 12 children, 35 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. His children are: C. Henry Foss, Philippine Islands; Christ and Emil P. Foss, Minneapolis, Minn.; Halden Foss, Cushman, Ore.; George Foss, Portland, Ore.; Helmer and Victor Foss, Sandpoint; Mrs. J.N.Wallestad, Wheelock. S. D.; Mrs. Svere Haug, Everett, Wash.; Mrs. Art Anderson, Mrs. Ella Ross and Mrs. Albert Peterson, Sandpoint. The funeral services were held from the Moon mortuary Friday afternoon at 2:30 with Rev. Louis Hagen, officiating. Interment was in Lakeview cemetery.
