George spent his youth in Kansas with his father, stepmother and half-brother. In his teens he went to work as a newspaper reporter and printer. By age twenty-one he had left home for Indianapolis where he worked as a printer. After the death of his young wife Georgia in 1897 he moved to Boston in 1902. On Sept. 16, 1903 he married Gertrude H. Meister, originally from Nova Scotia. He worked for the Boston Globe newspaper as a lynotypist for the rest of his life save a few years in the 1920s when he worked for a newspaper in El Paso, Texas.
