Julian's mother Georgia died when he was only 2 1/2. His maternal grandmother, Sarah Jane (Tedrow) Lewis took care of him until he went to live with his uncle Ransome Tedrow Lewis in Elmira, NY. Overhearing his aunt complain about supporting him, he left school in eighth or ninth grade to go to work.
He had several jobs including selling cars, but by the time he married in 1921 he had begun working in advertising as a copy writer. He spent his entire career as an ad man, rising to be an account executive for a number of large Advertising Agencies across the country.
