Smiley attended schools in Ravia, Goss and Stringtown. He joined the United States Army and served for about four years before being discharged. He served in the European Theater and was highly decorated for it. He married Doris Stinnett on Jan. 27, 1947. He retired from the United States Naval Ammunition Depot in 1973. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching westerns on television and playing dominos. He was a member of the American Legion of Kiowa for 63 years and also was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kiowa since 1953. He passed away at the age of 93 at a McAlester nursing center. Survivors include his wife, Doris Davis, of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Glenn Douglass Davis and wife, Shirley, Farmersville, Texas; daughter and son-in-law, Karen Janelle Horne and husband, Ron, Flower Mound, Texas. Also, two grandchildren, Janelle Diane Davis, Farmersville, and Douglas Glenn Davis, Farmersville, and one brother, Clarence Davis, of Vanoss. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marion and Florence Davis. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2010, at First Baptist Church of Kiowa with the Rev. Dennis Piearcy officiating. Burial will be at Kiowa Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service of McAlester. Pallbearers will be his nephews.
