Son of Chandler Madison Arthur and his wife Martha Jane Meadows. Born at Packs Ferry in Summers County, John was the younger brother of William L. Arthur.
The family moved to Beckley in Raleigh County by the time John was a teenager, and later to Clear Fork in Raleigh County.

John married Elizabeth "Betty" Combs. They were the parents of:
Blanche "Mrs. J. Evans" (1893-1940)
Leta "Lettie" "Mrs JR Crozier" (1895-?)
Henry Lee (1897-1903)
Lauzie "Mrs JR Cheesbrew" (1898-1986)
Lucy "Mrs. ZH Bailey" (1899-1979)
Gladys "Mrs. EH "Harry" Short (1903-1987)
Garnet "Mrs HJ Holiday" (1905-?)

Rites Tomorrow For John Arthur, 88

Funeral, services for John Arthur, 88, of Prosperity will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Prosperity Baptist Church by the Rev. Don Lowe and Rev. E. H. Fisher.

Arthur died at 9:07 a.m. Monday in a local hospital. He was a retired farmer, and a former member of the county court.

He had been a resident of Raleigh County for 70 years and was a member of the Prosperity Baptist Church. His wife, Betty Arthur, died in 1952.

Survivors include seven daughters, Mrs. J.R. Crozier and Mrs. J. S. Cheesbrew, both of Prosperity, Mrs. Lucy Bailey of Charleston, Mrs. H.J. Holliday of Baltimore, Md, Mrs. E.H. Short and Mrs. W.D Short, both of Zanesville, Ohio; and Mrs Roscoe Williams of Beckley; two sons, John, Jr. and Edgar, both of Prosperity; 25 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and three great-great-granchildren.

The body will remain at the Webb and Neal Funeral Home until one hour prior to services. Burial will be in the Mount Tabor Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Carl Toney, James Dearing, Basil Bailey, Clarence Morris, Nathan Nugen, Dewey Godbey, Carl Bunch, and Gene Riffe.
