Jacob was born near Bornheim or Heimersheim near Frankfurt Germany. The family is unsure of what his father's name was, possibly Christian or Christopher. Jacob's mother's last name was Weidmann. As of 1956, Jacob was the only one of his family that had immigrated to the U.S. He came about 1869 and worked in bakeries in St. Louis for about five years before settling in the Doniphan, Kansas area. He married Anna Barbara Biebel (1841-1913) in St Louis in Feb 1870 about a month after she arrived in the U.S. from Germany. After moving to the Doniphan area, he farmed and supported his family with carpentry work. A story passed down in the family was that Jacob died of acute alcohol poisoning while he was cleaning out a large wine vat. Apparently he was overcome by the fumes and died as a result.
Jacob and Anna had at least five children: Anna, Jacob, Fred "Uncle Fritz", Mary Anna, and Anton.
