He was the son of Jacob and Anna Barbara Biebel Koehler. His parents came to the U.S. from Germany in January 1870, along with his maternal grandmother, Catherine Spindler Biebel, and an uncle, Jacob Biebel. His siblings were: Anna, died young of Cholera; Jacob, died in 1933; Fredrick "Fritz", married Emma Mae Huss, 3-26-1915, "Fritz" died in August, 1966; Mary Anna E. Dunning married Alexander Hamilton Dunning, 1896. Mary died in 1952.

Anton married Lottie Flickinger on July 18, 1906, in Doniphan Ks. Their son Anton was born in 1907 and died in 1909 during the cholera epidemic. Lottie followed him in death two years later.

Anton married Grace Velma Jack January 19, 1916 in Doniphan, Ks. Their children were: Ralph Anton, died at birth 1916; Elmo Francis Perry Koehler. Elmo died June 17, 1944 of wounds in the invasion of Normandy France during World War II; Mary Louise Koehler; Jacob Robert Koehler; Kenneth Gale Koehler; Emma Jeanne Koehler.

Anton worked for a short time for the Atchison Railroad, but derived his livelihood from farming and carpentry. He was well known in the Atchison community for his gardens, and photos were frequently published in The Atchison Globe of his impressive tomato plants and the size of the tomatoes. He sold the produce from his gardens, fruit trees and berry bushes to support his family. He loved to hunt and fish, smoke his pipe and listen to baseball games on the radio. In his younger years, he played ball on the local men's team.
