Mary was the daughter of John Henry and Nancy E. (Allen) Hargis born in Derby,Perry County, Indiana. She married Arnold Elder II on 12 June 1837. Mary and her husband owned a general store on the banks of the Ohio River, and had 7 children:Dilyly Jane, Mary Rebecca, Ellen, George Franklin, Nancy Catherine, Thomas Lafayette, Arnold Augustus. Her husband died suddenly of "colic" probably cholera in 1854 and Mary kept the store until she became nervous about Morgan's Raiders during the Civil War; consequently, she sold out and moved to Oil Creek in Perry Co. to be away from the river. Her two youngest sons moved to Kansas in 1871, and in 1882 they returned to Indiana and she moved to Kansas to be close to them. She died in 1901 and is buried in Ash Rock Cemetery in Rooks County,Kansas.
