Arnold was the sixth child (of 11) born to Arnold and Sarah "Sally" ( Hayden) Elder. His parents moved to Indiana where he helped farm. Arnold married his first wife Margaret Springer on April 27,1831 and they had a daughter Sarah born in1832 . Margaret died shortly after, and he married Mary Hargis June 12, 1837. He and his wife owned a general store on the banks of the Ohio River, and had 7 children:Dilyly Jane,Mary Rebecca,Ellen,George Franklin,Nancy Catherine,Thomas Lafayette,Arnold Augustus. He died suddenly of "colic"probably cholera in 1854 and his wife kept the store until she became nervous about Morgan's Raiders during the Civil War, consequently; she sold out and moved to Oil Creek in Perry Co . to be away from the river.
