Services for Dr. Charles P Tillman Sr., 81, who died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, were Saturday at First Baptist Church in Houston with the Revs. Al Gaspard and Brian Tillman officiating.

Interment will follow at Houston Cemetery under the direction of Memorial Funeral Home.

Dr. Tillman was born in Pontotoc on March 8, 1920, the son of Francis Raymond and Olivia Shannon Tillman.

He was a member of First Baptist Church in Houston, where he was a Sunday school teacher for men and boys. He was educated at Pontotoc High School, the University of Mississippi, Southern College of Optometry, the University of Alabama and Penn State University. He served in the Army Medical Corps during World War II and began an optometry practice in Houston in 1949 and Eupora in 1950. He was a member and president of the Houston School District, and was a charter member of the Chickasaw Development Foundation. He was a charter member of the Houston Country Club, where he also served as president. He had been an member and president of the Houston Exchange Club, the Northeast Mississippi Optometric Association, and a member of the Mississippi State Optometry Board.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and three brothers.

He is survived by his wife, Nettie McCarty Tillman of Houston; one son, Dr. Charles P Tillman Jr., and his wife, Joetta, both of Houston; four daughters, Norma Neill and her husband, James both of Keller, Texas, Nancy Whirley and her husband, Richard, both of Goodhope, Ga., Beverly Smetko and her husband, Dr. Carl Smetko, both of Newport Coast, Calif., and Patricia T Daughtery and her husband, Steve, both of Florence, Ala.; one brother, James Tillman of Willington, Fla.; nine grandchildren, Brad Neill, Jason Neill, Jesse Neill, April Whirley, Richard Whirley, Brian Tillman, Jennifer T Kelly, Caleb Long and Denicia Long; and one great great grandson, Nathan Charles Tillman.

Pallbearers were his grandsons.

Honorary pallbearers were Crowell Armstrong, Jack Holleman, Tommy Baird, Max Johnson, Dr. Herman Smith and Armis Hawkins.
