George Newton Elledge, 89, of Huntsville, Al, passed away Wednesday, November 10, 2010 at home with his family around him.
He was born with a farmer's heart and died with a farmer's heart, loving the land and everything that God grew in it. He was born in Trousdale, KS, on his family's wheat farm and grew up there with eight brothers and sisters. He was a dedicated patriot who loved his country and was proud to have the American flag always in front of his home.
Mr. Elledge was a 21 year veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He flew B-17 bombers out of England and B-29s in the Pacific during World War II. After retiring from the military he worked until 1976 at Redstone Arsenal in what was formerly the Maintenance and Supply Directorate.
He was an Elder of Trinity Presbyterian Church, Huntsville. He was an active member of Helion Lodge #1 F. & A.M. He was also a member of National Sojourners, Redstone Chapter #353, and the Heroes of '76. He served five times as Past Patron of Helion Chapter #203, Order of Eastern Star. He served several years as a board member for the Order of Rainbow Girls, White Light #66, and was awarded the Grand Cross of Colors twice.
Mr. Elledge is survived by his wife, Carol V. Elledge, of Huntsville; his son, Timothy G. Elledge, of Knoxville, TN; and two daughters Marsha E. Johnson and Janet A. Elledge-Nauman, both of Huntsville. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Daniel Erbert (Melissa), Susan Yates, and Michael Nauman of Huntsville, Diane Richard (Roald) of Scottsboro, and Jessica and Caitlin Elledge of Washington D.C., and eight great grandchildren. He is also survived by two sisters, Peggy Delight Marquardt of Pratt, KS and Eris Russell of San Jose, CA, and a brother Dr. Fred Elledge, of Oceanside, CA, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at Spry Funeral Home of Huntsville with the funeral services immediately following with Rev. Dr. Toby Mueller officiating. Burial will follow at Valhalla Memory Gardens.
