When Rolland was a small boy, his parents passed away and he came to Iowa at the age of 15 to live with his uncle, Jason Bennett, a well respected cattleman with a five hundred acre farm and member of the school board.
Rolland worked as a farm hand.
After marriage his family lived on a farm near Woodland, Iowa and in the fall they made sorghum from cane. They ground the juice out and cooked it down and made what most people call molasses.
