Mabel was brutally murdered and found dead in the alleyway behind her home. Her brothers and mother were accused of killing her because she was rejecting the suitor that the family wished her to marry. Her brother Thomas was arrested for the crime and committed suicide while in jail. Her mother and other brothers were tried for the crime but acquitted.
